Stretch Mark Creams, Treatments, and Information

Stretch Marks

Stretch Marks are a concern for millions of mothers, both expecting and current. Pregnancy and the post-partum period are a very emotional time. A physical issue like stretch marks can add to the high stress levels and emotional rollercoaster that many new mothers experience. Fortunately for most women, these marks will slowly fade over time. There are creams and ointments that claim to speed up this process, we will review many of them throughout our site.

How Common Are Stretch Marks?

It is difficult to get exact numbers, but most women will be affected during or after pregnancy to some degree. The severity of stretch marks varies widely among women. A number of factors are thought to play a role in determining this. For example, some say that people who have been relatively small and skinny their whole lives are more prone to stretch marks. The theory is that their skin is not elastic, or stretchy. Because of this, the sudden weight gain of pregnancy causes an almost trauma-like effect on the skin.

Unfortunately, there are not many large scale clinical studies that have been conducted to determine the causes of and effective treatments for stretch marks. Some people say that applying stretch mark creams, or cocoa butter during pregnancy can prevent stretchmarks. A few doctors say that it is mostly a genetic issue, and not much can be done to prevent this problem.

Luckily, there are a number of treatment options available. It is VERY IMPORTANT to talk to your doctor before trying any of them, especially if you are still breastfeeding. Some stretch mark creams and treatments have powerful chemicals in them which could seep into the skin and contaminate breastmilk.
